Visits to Hilo Hawaii
wegian
from Pittsburgh
December 19, 2004
Our typical day begins with breakfast at Ken's House of Pancakes. Their pancakes, with
lilikoi
and coconut syrups, are
ono
! On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can stop by the farmers market in Hilo. Be sure to try the locally grown apple bananas. Many other local grinds and tropical flowers are available at reasonable prices. Visit the Tsunami Museum in downtown Hilo. Have a seat under the giant Banyan Tree in beautiful Liliuokalini Gardens. Take a drive north of Hilo to the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens (take the scenic road at the exit of Route 19 just a couple miles outside of Hilo). You will want to stop many times along the way - the views are stunning. Travel further north to the Waipio Valley. You can see the breathtaking view from the lookout, or you can take the extremely steep road down into the valley. The road is intended for 4-wheel-drive vehicles only and is not for the faint of heart. Southwest of Hilo is the volcano. See the beautiful and unusual landscapes (bring warm clothes just in case), and if you are lucky, flowing lava.${QuickSuggestions} ${BestWay} There is not much in the way of public transportation. A rental car is a must. There are so many sights to see, and a rental car is the only way to see many of them.
