The Old Town of Tartu is very compact but more importantly, it boasts a very quiet, relaxed atmosphere allowing you to catch your breath in pleasant, understated surroundings. If you go expecting the stunning delights of Tallinn then you will undoubtedly be disappointed. However, if you want a taste of provincial Estonian life then Tartu is the destination for you. Locals tout it as the most Estonian place in the country.
It's easy to take in all the 'sights' in an afternoon:
Stroll around the Toomemagi, a tiny hill overlooking the city.
Pause for a photograph on the sacrificial stone. (see photos)
Pass time chilling in Raekoja Plats
Explore the corridors of academia in the beautiful Corinthian University.
${QuickSuggestions} The best way to experience Tartu is to gently stroll around the Old Town on foot. The buildings are a little jaded and in places crumbling but this amounts to a more authentic experience than the restored perfection of Tallinn.
In summer time, take the opportunity to relax in Raekoja Plats with a Saku watching the day go by.${BestWay} The town itself is very small and you can walk from one end of the centre to the other in about 10 minutes - no need to do anything other than walk.
