Quote: This stunning historic pousada is located on the slopes of the Serra de Esperanca, close by the natural park Serra de Estrella and Portugal’s highest area. The views from its terrace are magnificent. This restored building was erected upon the old convent of de Nossa Senhora Esperanca {our lady of hope}. Jorge Cabral, a relative of Pedro Alvares Cabral who accidentally discovered Brazil, endowed the rebuilding. Pedro was born in the 12th-century castle, and his ashes are interred in the lovely but tiny church of St Tiago here in Belmonte.

There are 24 rooms in this pousada, all beautifully furnished in keeping with the historic nature of the building. Stonewalls and wooden beams all meld together to create harmony. The 13th-century chapel and sacristy is now a comfortable lounge complete with a bar, and in the background, muted classical music soothes the soul. The dining room has a huge fireplace, and stunning views are to be had from the adjoining stone terrace. We ate here two nights. The food was top-class and the choice of desserts was mind-boggling.

All the rooms are named after monks. Our room was named Frei Humberto, and all I can say is that he never had a room as large as ours- it was huge. The adjoining bathroom was also large, with every amenity one would require. Like the public rooms, the decor fitted nicely into the setting. It was beautifully furnished and offset with gleaming wood and crisp linens. The balcony with table and chairs looked out over the valleys and mountains

The staff can arrange trips to the park {hikes}. The tranquil setting of this pousada has to be seen to be believed. I felt that I was in a cocoon, pampered and spoilt. We did not use the outdoor pool because it was too cold, but the setting is lovely. As is usual, a hot-and-cold buffet breakfast was included in the rate {190€}.
