The Hunter Peak Ranch is located about 60 miles northwest of Cody, Wyoming on Hwy 296 (Chief Joseph Hwy). The owners, Lou and Shelley Cary were wonderful, friendly people who were extremely accommodating for our every need or request.
We stayed in a two-bedroom suite in a two-story building next to the original house. The facilities were rustic in decor, but all modern amenities were provided. The unit included a living room/dining area off of the kitchen, fully furnished kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a loft with two twin beds above the living area.
Located on the banks of the Clarksfork River, our entire family was encouraged to roam around and discover the ranch on our own or we could visit with the owners and other guests by playing outdoor games, using the library or ping-pong table, riding horses, crossing over the river in a hand-pulled trolley (our children LOVED this), or just wandering around enjoying nature's sights. If we so desired, we could eat meals in the ranch house served homestyle at large tables or be off on our own to explore the area.
The only drawback we encountered was the location of the ranch. We were expecting it to be closer to Cody for grocery shopping, restaurants, sights, etc. Its proximity to Yellowstone was its saving grace for us. We could get to the Northwest entrance to the park from the ranch in about 30-45 minutes. There is also the small town of Cooke City, Montana on the way to the park entrance about 15-20 minutes away with a old time grocery for picking up a few things. Of course, it was more expensive than going into town for supplies.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience with the people and appreciating the peace and quiet of nature away from the stress of everyday life. If was a time to reconnect with our family and the environment. Our children now have a greater respect for nature and its power than they did before.
