The Travel Inn, part of the Empire Hotel Group, is located in Midtown Manhattan on 42nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues; a short walk to Broadway and Times Square, the Javits Center, the USS Intrepid, and the Circle Line Boat Tours.

If you have ever tried to park a car in the Big Apple you will definitely appreciate the hotel’s parking garage. It is multi-leveled free parking for their guests. Normally you could expect to pay between $15 and $25 per day in a public lot.

The hotel is well posted with signs, making it easy to find. Be sure to check-in before you park your car and get a card to place on the windshield. The watchful parking attendants make sure only guests park here.

When you check-in, pay attention to the directions to your room. There are two sets of elevators, each servicing a section of the hotel. Depending on your location, you may need to take one elevator to the third floor - walk past the pool to another set of elevators. This second elevator is accessible from the garage parking, and once you get the hang of it, it makes it easy to get to and from your car.

Our room was a double; a narrow room that we actually had to walk sideways between the bed and the armoire hiding the television. The bathroom was small also, but hey! This is New York City. The TV worked well, the bed was very comfortable, and there was a large window that could be opened - something important for those of us who suffer from "AC/Heating" allergies. There are a total of 160 rooms, including an Executive Suite and larger Deluxe Rooms with two queen beds and much more space than the double.

A large swimming pool and patio occupies the center of the hotel on the third floor. Unfortunately, all the furniture had been stored away for the winter, so it looked pretty bare; I can imagine the popularity of this area on a hot summer day. Next to the pool is a small exercise room and vending machines.

Across the parking entrance from the lobby is the River West Café, owned by the Travel Inn. It is open 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. The fare is typical New York - bagels and lox, toasted bagels spread thick with cream cheese, along with the traditional eggs, bacon, and French toast.

Within a half block of the Hotel is the Kraft Coffee Shop/Restaurant, open late for an "after the theater" coffee and dessert.

As far as security, there is a police substation directly across the street and guess what - the night we stayed at the hotel, we did not even hear a siren.

Quote: The Travel Inn in midtown Manhattan is a clean, safe budget hotel located near the Port Authority. Conveniently, a city bus that goes through the heart of Times Sqaure stops near the front door of the hotel. The same bus goes to the Javits Center. The hotel lobby is small but has a tour desk, brochures for city attractions and a small store. The desk attendants were efficient but not overly friendly. The two elevators were a little slow as people were leaving around check-out time, 12pm, when I arrived. Check-in time is 3pm but I was allowed to check in early. When I went to my room, the maid was still cleaning it. I used that time to explore the hotel pool area and exercise room. The exercise room, which opens to the pool area, was small but nice. It had a beverage machine, new equipment and TV’s. No one was using it when I went in, unlike the pool. The pool was filled with kids and their parents. The partiality-covered pool area was very large with deck chairs, as well as a few tables.

My room overlooked the pool. The room was nicely remodeled with a king bed and all of the standard hotel amenities. The room had a tv in a cabinet, video games, pay-for-view movies, a desk, a refrigerator, a lounge chair and side table, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer and an alarm clock. The small bathroom was clean and was highlighted by mirrors on the shower doors and bright lighting.

The hotel featured FREE PARKING with no entrance or exit fees, and 24-hour room service. There were lots of restaurants in walking distance. The location is a bit out of the way, compared to other midtown hotels, but for anyone with a car seeking budget accommodations, I would give this hotel a solid recommendation. People with children visiting the city in the summer should also consider this hotel.

This average hotel in an unattractive part of Manhattan is located 4 blocks from the Jacob A. Javits Convention Center and a block from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and near the Lincoln Tunnel. From the Tunnel, make a left on 40th Street, a right on 10th Avenue and a left on 42nd Street to the FREE PARKING of the hotel. The good value, the free parking and the friendly staff are the best assets here.

We stayed in a clean room with two double beds, a desk, TV center (with Internet and Atari games available for a fee) and amenities in the bathroom. The mattresses were fine for one person, but slanted when two used the same bed. If you have back problems, make sure you have your own bed. There was a smell when we returned in the evening. (I assume this was from the heater but the windows opened to the fresh air and the smell was soon gone.)

Because the streets are noisy around the hotel, ask for an inside room. The hotel has a pool (empty in winter), and an exercise room with new equipment.

It was fun going next door to the River West Café and Deli for breakfast. "Mr. Personality," William, not only waited on us, but amused us with stories of New York and its entertainment industry. The breakfast was good, too, and inexpensive.

I recommend this hotel if you have to stay near the Javits Center.
