Here was another interesting little surprise outside of Manhattan. McDowell Creek Rd just looked like a good place to get off the interstate and do some exploring and it proved to be a good choice of roads for finding bits of history. Not too far off the interstate we came to Deep Creek School. It is a sandstone building in excellent condition. Outside the school stood two large signs indicating the history of the location. This structure was the third school built in the area and it was constructed so well that it is still used by the residents as a community building. The amount of sandstone blocks that were dressed by early settlers and used in their buildings never ceases to amaze me.

The interior of the building is not open to the public for viewing, and I imagine if it is now used as a community building the original interior no longer exists.

Apparently this site has a known history that predates the arrival of the white settlers. Though the graves are unmarked, this was a location where Native Americans used for burial.
