For a fine dining experience, the U.S. Hotel can provide nostalgia, ambience and good food. A restored 19th-century dining room serves fine American cuisine, including some regional favorites. Those interested in the beginnings of Hollidaysburg, founded by the canal and railroad industry, will find a wealth of information here as well. The restaurant and tavern was originally established to serve travellers heading west. The very first U.S. Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1871 but rebuilt in 1886. The bar was added in 1905 and still maintains the beautiful hand-carved mahogany backbar, beveled mirrors and brass footrail. Over the years the bar and restaurant endured many changes but the current proprietors have worked hard to return it to its original grandeur. With all of this history attached to it, it is not surprising that the U.S. Hotel lays claim to having various resident "ghosts". Pictures, audiotapes, stories have all been recorded in various parts of the hotel of eerie shapes, voices, images. The Allegheny County Ghosthunters Association holds their meetings here! Maybe the spirits cant resist the food either and keep coming back?
