If you can get past the overwhelming smell of wrotten eggs that comes off the "beautiful lake" and permeates the carpeting & curtains, this is a decent hotel. The hotel is clean, but is in need of some updates: paint and hall carpeting, elevators, etc. The rooms were nice: spacious bathroom, comfortable beds, balcony with table and chairs. You are within walking distance of the quaint town with lots of shops and mom & pop restaurants. The hotel offers a Hangi Dinner and Maori cultural performance. If you miss the bus to the Maori Cultural Center, then the hotel's show will do as an introduction to Maori life, but it's not Broadway. The staff is very attentive and polite, always asking how your day was and what you enjoyed most. Although we were booked into a room in a building without an elevator, the staff quickly changed our room when learning we had a person who isn't able to use stairs.
