We absolutely loved the Fairmont. Its location on Nob Hill is ideal -- we considered a hotel in Union square but were so glad we chose the Fiarmont instead. It is elegant yet not stuffy, and the neighborhood is very quiet at night, unlike the very very tourist-y Union square. All the staff were helpful and friendly, and although the cocktails were pricey, the lobby was worth the price. Don't miss the kitsch delight of the Tonga room -- tiki, fabulous, and self-aware, at least i hope so! Criticisms we'd read were true: there is no coffee in the rooms and you have to go to the st; level to buy your own coffee each morning, and you have to pay for the privilege to work out (but walking in the city solves that). If the Fairmont were to install coffee makers or offer free coffee until later than 7am, I would rate it perfect. San Francisco is a beautiful place to visit, and the Fairmont is a fantastic part of the experience.
