We stayed at the Embassy Suites on a family vacation. At first, I was hesitant to stay downtown, since it is not in the middle of the "action" in midtown, but a subway station is close, and cab fare for the four of us to midtown venues like the theater never exceeded 12 dollars. The location was not an issue at all, and in fact made for a very nice stay. The hotel is on a quiet street, and there was absolutely no street noise - quite a rare find in Manhattan. The area is also very safe and clean, and the downtown area is the oldest part of NYC - dating back to the 1600s - some very cool stuff to see and do. The hotel staff was VERY helpful and courteous, the rooms clean and well-appointed - and larger than most NYC hotel rooms. The only thing I will note is that the hotel no longer offers a view of the waterfront - a condo complex has sprung up between the hotel and the Hudson, so you will not get that "harbor view" that the website promotes. It's totally OK, though - great hotel!!!!
