Super Sagar

I visited Sagar, a South Indian vegetarian restaurant, in Percy St (close to Tottenham Court Road) one Sunday lunchtime. They also have a large vegan menu as well as a good understanding of dishes that may be unsuitable for nut allergy sufferers or those with gluten intolerance, or prefer to avoid garlic or onion.

To start I had Kancheepuram Idli, (£5.45) which were mildly spiced lentil and potato dumplings with assorted dips. They would have been quite dry without the dips, and were quite filling. The spicy Rasam soup (£3.50) was well received as was the Potato Bonda (£3.65).

I had heard good things about the dosas here (loosely wrapped pancakes type dishes) so selected the Mysore Masala Dosa for £7.25 upon recommendation. I did find it quite similar to the starter, just with a bit more carrot. The dips were also very similar. Saag Paneer (spinach and cottage cheese) and Paneer dosas were also popular choices in our party. The menu is extensive and includes classic curries like masalas and kormas, thalis (from £14.25) and lentil pizzas. I am not sure what the latter are as no one ordered them, so I am intrigued to try them on another visit.

They serve beer and wine here, but I plumped for a mango lassi which is a flavoured yoghurt and milk drink (£3.25). They also do the usual range of carbonated soft drinks and well as fruit juices.

Lavatories are downstairs, I only saw stairs down, so don’t think this place is suitable for wheelchairs, other than in the main restaurant. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable about the menu.

Overall my two course lunch with two soft drinks came to about £20 with service. Whilst not the cheapest lunch I have ever had, it is possible to eat here for £12-15 if you choose other items from the menu and stick to tap water or colas instead of juices or lassi. The extensive menu means it would be great to go back and try again.
