Our flight landed at Melbourne Airport at 9.15pm and 15 minutes later we were in our hotel room. Most travellers will know that is almost impossible but for the first time in our travels, this actually happened. It was a happy coincident of events and a great hotel location that made it possible.Melbourne airport is relatively quiet at that time of night with most business people and international flights already departed. We walked to the baggage retrieval area just in time to see the first bags appear. Miraculously our two cases were amongst the first five on the carousel so we immediately headed out the door. The Parkroyal Hotel is across the road. We rode the elevator to the fourth floor, were greeted in the lobby by a receptionist and had our room key within 30 seconds. As we opened our room door I glanced at my watch. It was just after 9.30pm.The first thing we noticed in the room was the modern design and the extensive views across the airport through a giant-size window. On closer examination we found tea / coffee facilities, cable TV channels with in-room flight information, movies on demand, electronic safe, iron / ironing board, mini bar, international direct dial telephone with voicemail, and a nice work desk. We immediately wished we had arrived earlier. The marble bathroom with shower and separate bath tub had excellent lighting, a selection of good quality toiletry products, and robes and slippers. We had seen a bar, cafe and restaurant at lobby level but as we had eaten on the plane we decided against going out. A quick check of the 24-hour in-room menu showed us some options but sleep was catching up with us after our flight. Because of our early night we arose early and checked out the heated indoor lap pool, spa, sauna and steam room. Guests have 24 hour access to the gymnasium so we had a short workout and then enjoyed the pool. Someone had worked hard on the hotel sound proofing because while we could hear a little aircraft noise here, in our room there was complete silence with the curtains drawn. The buffet breakfast at the restaurant was outstanding. Apart from the pre-prepared items we could order omelettes and other things to be made then delivered to the table. There was a waffle machine which seemed popular with children and others, and delicious fresh fruit juice which we particularly enjoyed. I needed some photocopying done so visited the Business Centre. It was here that I discovered the hotel had a range of meeting rooms used by fly-in visitors and local businesses. That made a lot of sense as interstate people could have their meeting without leaving the airport and be home for dinner at night. We were reluctant to leave the Parkroyal. We found all staff to be helpful and courteous and the facilities are excellent. The location is perfect if you have an early or late flight but we would consider staying there even if this was not the case.
