Great view, not too overpriced

The Hope of the Black Whale is the "fancy" restaurant in Zaanse Schans, a cute, historical little section of Zaandam, famous for its 12 or so functioning windmills. My girlfriend and I biked up for the day from Amsterdam--normally a pretty easy trip--and were famished from fighting strong, cold winds most of the way. Normally, we'd avoid a place like this because of its potential to be overpriced with a touist markup, but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was on the costly side, but not a total ripoff. We each had a traditional mustard soup and split the hamburger -- all tasty, especially the soup. Beers were cheaper than in Amsterdam.

The restaurant does have a great patio on the canal with really lovely views. If you are making a trip to Zaanse Schans in the warmer weather and feel like eating fancy, this is a great option. Otherwise, and year-round, there is a really cozy bar area with the same view -- next time we go, I think we'll get drinks there and just pack our own food.
