During my Fall 2012 road trip, I enjoyed taking a slight detour en-route up to La Crosse to check out this apple orchard. Located about 50 miles south of La Crosse, the drive through the Kickapoo Valley is well worth the time and effort. This year was not particularly good for Wisconsin farmers due to the drought we experienced. In some areas, the apple harvest was less than in past years but fortunately the Kickapoo Orchard had an apparently "OK" year. I had remembered visiting this orchard some 15 years ago long after fall, so the area was rather barren and absent of color. On this trip, however, the fall colors were exploding. Add to that the Sunflower Maze behind the storefront & bakery, and you can see why I spent some time here taking it all in.The Kickapoo Orchard is a family owned orchard that sells dozens of varieties of apples as well as baked goods and other seasonal fruits including cherries and grapes. Check out their website to see harvest dates and available varieties for purchase. Inside their store, they also sell a number of other items including apple butter, jellies/jams and cider. As of this date (10/2/12) there are still a number of varieties yet to be harvested for this season. If you are planning to buy apples for pies and other baked goods, check out their "seconds" area out on the front porch for great savings by the pound or bushel. Inside you can buy first quality apples by the sack or basket. While visiting, children will enjoy the Sunflower Maze. Be aware, however, there are lots of bees in this area so be sure that if your kid is allergic to them, you have an epi-pen ready in case they get stung.
