A Delightful Dinner

Frankly, I think clichés such as "died and gone to heaven" and "a little slice of heaven" are misplaced, but NOT when used in reference to restaurants like Le Petit Moulinsart in Vieux Montreal. Moules, or mussels as we know them, are one of my favorite dishes. I also like to have them accompanied by a good Belgian beer. My preference is a fruity beer like a Framboise. Well, here is where the died and gone to heaven part began. My husband and I had read about this restaurant in the (Dorling Kindersley) guide, "Top Ten, Montreal and Quebec City". The restaurant was just doors away from our hotel on rue Saint Paul Ouest, which made for easy accessibility.

Our waitress, Marielle, was very professional and an absolute delight. Her English, being better than our French, made the conversation flow easily. She answered my husband’s questions about the beers they offered and guided us on the different mussels preparations. I selected a spicier version of mussels called Moules Picaros and my husband went with the Moules Madagascar. The bite in mine was just right, giving them lots of flavor yet not burning your taste buds. They were incredibly good. I washed them down with a Mort Subite Framboise. There are no words to describe the "yum factor" that I experienced. The sauce for my mussels was so incredibly tasty that I kept asking for more baguettes to soak it up.

Though the restaurant serves more than just mussels, it seems to be their claim-to-fame. The establishment is divided into two sections, with one being the more sedate dining area with more illumination and the other being a darkened bar area with entertainment later in the evening. They are open for lunch Monday – Friday from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm and their dinner schedule runs Monday through Saturday from 5:00 to 11:00 pm. Our experience was one that will definitely have us recommending them to friends and returning if we’re even in lovely Vieux Montreal again!
