The great thing about New York is its other-worldly-ness. I live in Indianapolis, and everything is kind of by-the-book. New York City, on the other hand, has every style, look, and feel you could possibly imagine. So anytime my wife and I travel to the city we try to seek out places that’ll give us an experience that doesn’t remind us of our midwestern roots. This time we opted for the Royalton Hotel on 44th Street just off Times Square. Our stay there was prompted by a Travelzoo deal. Unlike other hotels, The Royalton has a very exclusive feel. The exterior alone makes you wonder whether it’s a hotel for weary travelers or a mid-town law office. The dimly-lit lobby served more as an evening lounge instead of a place for hotel guests to check-in. We arrived around 7:00 pm on a Friday, and we literally thought we had walked into a restaurant. We rolled our suitcases past the happy hour-ers until we found the front desk tucked away behind wood paneled columns. Our room wasn’t spacious. It’s New York after all, AND we had paid a bottom-of-the-barrel price, but the finishings and decorations were tastefully done. The Royalton did provide an iPad in every room, which we used to order room services, request more towels, and check the daily news. It was very modern, and I hope more hotels adopt that feature. All in all, it’s a fabulous hotel that we’d definitely stay in again. Not only was it a comfortable weekend, but the location is superb. We were a block from Times Square, two blocks from NBC, and a block from 5th Ave. For tourists such as ourselves, we essentially had New York at our doorstep.
