The Grand Place in Brussels is the heart and soul of the city and somewhere that all tourists to the city are bound to wander through several times during their visit. The square is large and the buildings impossing and I found that it certainly made for an impressive sight. The Grand Place is where you will find some of the most impressive architecture in the Whole of Europe and luckily nearly all of it has reamined more or less unscathed during the past few hundred years. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most visited attraction in Brussels. Everywhere you look you are surrounded by magnificent examples of elegant classical style buildings that once housed the local guilds but now are most likely to be a shop or restaurant. The medieval gothic town hall is located here and is dominated by it's large clock tower. This building is the largest in the Grand Place and in my opinion the most stunning. Dating from the 1400's the town hall is decorated by numerous statues and no matter how many times you stop and stare at it you will always find something else to look at. I have never been to a town square before where every building was gorgeous and interesting and demanded I take a closer look at it like the Grand Place in Brussels. Having a coffee or a beer on one of the many outside terraces is an interesting experience as the location is just so unique and stunning and definately something you should do. There are plenty of shops in the area selling lace and other tourist trappings which I didn't really fin all that interesting but this is also where you will find the best chocolate shops in the city where you definately have to go and buy some to take home with you. At night the Grand Place is especially beautiful as it is lit up and becomes even more stunning than it is during the day and when it is quiet you can really get a feeling of how it must have been hundreds of years ago when it was first built. We went near Christmas and there was a concert of classical music every night in the square and this really was an unforgettable experience and I would also like to visit again and see the flower carpet as I imagine that would be amazing. The Grand Place is a definate must see in Brussels and it could quite possibly be the most beautiful town square in the whole of Europe.
