After reading all the negative reviews on this site, I almost canceled my reservation at the St. Ann. I'm so glad I didn't now. Frankly, I don't get the complaints at all. The hotel was lovely and had a real old world charm. The courtyard was actually much nicer in reality. The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was large and in perfect working order. You absolutely can't beat the location and price. Just try finding another hotel in the heart of the French Quarter for $55/night (weeknights). Instead of paying $80+ per night at some generic Days Inn, I got a unique bed and breakfast feel at a discount motel rate. Across the street next to the Police Station is a terrific open air Cafe that sells warm fresh baked Beignets. Maybe I'm easy to please, but I loved that you could actually OPEN the windows to get a breeze and hear the sounds of Conti and Royal Streets, though even with the windows closed the street noise is fairly loud at night. I was informed that that is common for most French Quarter hotels, since they are usually older and don't have modern sound-proof windows. One thing I noticed was that the staff has a rather blunt way of speaking. I don't think it is meant to be rude at all, just straight to the point. When you talk to them like people, not servants, they are actually very sweet and helpful. Obviously, this hotel isn't for those looking for pampering. That is clear from the price. There are plenty of pricer hotels that can satisfy that need, but if you want to save some money, you can't expect not to sacrifice something. It's more suitable for those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and aren't planning on spending much time in their rooms. All and all, it was the perfect place for us and we will certainly be going back.
