Snorkel John Pennekamp Reef

Pennekamp was a good place to spend the day, however, it is probably would not be a destination unless you scuba dive (which we don't) or fish (which we didn't). We enjoyed our picnic in one of the shelters that ring the parking lot. The beach areas were small and clean with very calm water to float, snorkel, or relax on the sand. The grounds around the beached were beautiful. Swimming area snorkeling will allow you to see a variety of small sea critters.

The reef snorkeling trip was fun. The reef is beautiful although not as vibrant at the one I snorkeled in Cancun. Most impressive about the reef trip was the boat captain's willingness to learn the language of his passengers. There was a family from Germany aboard so the captain asked if there was a German speaking passenger who would teach him a few phrases. A young man came forward and the captain learned how to say important phrases that allowed him to give directions in both English and German. It was very impressive and quite respectful of his customers. When he spoke German over the PA the faces of the German family lit up. It appeared he made their trip that much more enjoyable. The boat ride to and from was through some pretty impressive mangroves and lasts about 30 minutes one way.

It is worth a day trip if you want to beach it or float in beautiful surroundings.
