The Welk Resort is an excellent place for a family vacation. We have a family of five, including kids ranging from three to eight years old. Here are the high points:> The lodging is excellent. We stayed in the two-bedroom villas. They are 1,400ft², have a full kitchen (stove, full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave), living room, and in-room laundry facilities. The living room had cable (the bedrooms also had nice TVs with cable), a DVD player, VHS player, and a stereo. Everything was clean. We were very comfortable with a family of five. There are other sized accommodations.> The pools on the property are very nice. There are three or four sites with pools. One site is especially designed for kids and has two pools, a large (140-foot, I believe) water slide, and a splash zone for younger kids. Our kids loved the slide and there were never lines of any significance for the slide. There are other sites with pools on the property as well.> There are a number of recreation centers on the property. The center nearest us had activities for all ages, including billiards, air hockey, and foosball. They also had video game boxes and games at the centers that could be checked out and used at the center. There was one room in the rec center that had abundant toys for small children. The centers also had a good assortment of books. > The property has a catch and release pond. Poles are available for check-out for a modest fee. Bait is also available for a modest fee. We always caught fish when we went. It is a lot of fun.> There are numerous scheduled optional activities available. These include crafts for kids and adults, movie nights, ice cream sundae-making, and a variety of other things. We did a family scavenger hunt. > There are Las Vegas-style shows on the property as well, but we did not get to make it to any. They looked good. > There is a large golf course on the property. We don't golf and can't comment on how challenging the course is. On the negative:> We rented our rooms but this is a timeshare and you will be given the option of going to a sales presentation in exchange for free tickets to some attraction or some other inducement. The sales presentation was high pressure and left a bad taste in out mouths. Just be warned in the event you are offered this.> The restaurant on-site is a bit pricey and only mediocre.> The Welk San Diego is actually in Escondido, which is about 40 minutes north of San Diego when there is no traffic. If you plan to take advantage of the countless opportunities around San Diego (the Zoo, Legoland, etc.), be aware that traffic can be bad. It is best to travel after or before high traffic times, and this can limit your schedule.
