Shangri-La is a rustic, comfortable, unique experience. If you are looking for a pristine, air-conditioned, concrete box, this is definitely not what you want. This is no "Ritz". At the Shangri-La, everyone stays in individual "huts" right on the white sand beach. My family and I recently returned from a week-long vacation at this resort. My husband and I have visited this lovely hotel several times in the past 12 years after discovering it in National Geographic Traveler magazine. We have always had nothing but wonderful experiences staying at Shangri-La and have recommended it to several family members, friends, and co-workers, but we are not certain we can recommend this establishment any longer. I left yesterday with a sour taste in my mouth. It appears to us that they have hired THIEVES to do the cleaning or supervising of rooms! We stayed in 16B from June 11-18th and my husband had his Nautica swim trunks and a canvas hat stolen. My son had his Geoxx tennis shoes stolen. When a neighbor in 15B talked with me, he informed me that he had $100 stolen from the closet of his room. I realize that maybe tennis shoes, a hat, and swim trunks seem petty theft, but I no longer trust that any of my things would be safe locked in my room (especially after talking with the neighbor!). My husband filed a "report" with the "Security" but how do I know that they aren't part of the problem? When we discussed this with the front desk "Rafael", he didn't seem too concerned and acted as though we were bothering him! He was basically useless and of no help. What a waste! We were extremely upset and very disappointed! We can only suspect the cleaning people, since they are the ones that have keys to the room. My husband talked with one of the cleaning ladies, but of course she "didn't have any idea what happened". I would keep an eye on those cleaning people and the so-called security people. Also, a separate issue is the recommendation we received for a car rental. The staff recommended "Express Car Rental". It turned out to be a terrible, very unfortunate mistake on our part to have gone with this company. They provided a rusted out, rundown van with two flat tires and no reliable spare or tools to change a tire! That company must be some major scam artists and I would never recommend them. After these two fiascoes, what normally is a relaxing experience, was not. I hope some corrections will be made, because no one will want to stay in a place where they do not feel safe!
