Best Things About the Resort:
It is away from all the craziness of Acapulco Bay! The resort is near the airport and just a 20-minute cab ride into the busy part of town. It is an enormous resort that boasts the world's largest swimming pool.
Resort Experience:
The Grand Mayan Acapulco is an exquisite resort. Our one-bedroom unit featured a private swimming pool on our balcony and Jacuzzi tub. There were granite countertops throughout, stainless appliances, and his and hers sinks in the bathroom. The only disappointment was that some of the things that you are used to having provided in a timeshare, such as coffee, aren't provided. There is a Wal-Mart Supercenter about 5 minutes away by taxi. This was an inexpensive place for groceries. Housekeeping came about three times per day, and there were staff members everywhere, always cleaning, polishing, and keeping things looking great. The pools were very clean. There was even an enormous pool area dedicated to kids, with huge plastic toys and inner tubes for them to play with. The pools were just amazing, with rock features and waterfalls throughout. The resort itself has a huge pond just beyond the entrance full of all kinds of fish. Here there are sculptures everywhere and marble and travertine tile floors and walls.
There are three restaurants, one of which is a buffet with a changing theme nightly. The other is ocean-view seafood dining. The third was closed for renovation while I was there. The least expensive place to eat was at the poolside snack bar. The biggest culinary disappointment for me was that there was nowhere to get Mexican food at the resort beyond nachos and guacamole at the snack bar! I had to travel into the bay area for Mexican food, because there are no restaurants nearby the resort. There is an upscale bar that has 2-for-1 happy-hour specials nightly.
The Grand Mayan is a 20-minute taxi ride from Acapulco Bay, which is where all the famous nightlife is located, as well as the open-air flea markets, where you can try your hand at bargaining for beautiful Mexican goods. This is definitely where I'd recommend getting your authentic food!
The resort sponsors many day trips, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, trips to see the cliff divers (a must-see), tours around Old Acapulco, and other things of general interest. I went during the last part of May and beginning of June. I packed long pants and long-sleeved shirts, but I didn't need them, even at night, unless I was indoors somewhere that was air-conditioned. Part of the resort is inside, and the other part is open-air, so it can get humid when you're just walking around the grounds. Pack accordingly!
