John Pennecamp Glass Bottom Boat tripThe John Pennecamp Park has a really exceptional glass bottom boat named, Spirit of Pennekamp. Over the years I have been on many glass bottom boat tours and have found them to be all about the same - --the glass is usually foggy and the views are present but not stellar. Well, the boat at John Pennecamp is head and shoulders above anything comparable I have been on prior. The view is positively clear, there is no fogging nor crud on the glass (which is the rule rather than the exception on other glass bottom boats). You take a ride out to some shallow reef areas and the views are very nice in deed. The boat is 65 feet long and is a high-speed Catamaran. Trips are about 2 ½ hours long (45 minutes to ride out, and hour at the reef and about 45 minutes back). The cost was $22 for adults and $15 for children under 12. It was well worth the cost. We went on a rainy day and there were about 45 people on the trip . . . .the only enclosed (out of the rain) areas were reasonably filled with the amount of people present . . .the boat capacity is about 150 people - --and I don’t have any idea how that many people would be accommodated around the viewing areas during the hour at the reef- --at 45 the viewing areas were filled. You should call and make reservations (the day of or day before would be adequate lead time) . . .and choose a time with the fewest people. They offer trips daily (weather permitting) at about 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. - -as explained by the individual making the reservation, usually the 9 a.m. trip is a little less busy than the noon and the 3 is usually the least in demand.
