It is undetermined whether the homes built in Charleston were done so because the architech's only new how to design in that manner or because they antcipated the possiblity that taxation would follow the European customs. At that time in Europe a home was taxed by the amount of 'frontage' it had. So the homes are built one room across, many deep and several stories high. To get a true appreciation for the size of the home you must take a tour. The antiques and the beautiful ballroom are breath taking. Admission is $15 for adults.
