El Valle is located on Isla de Margarita to the north of Porlamar and La Asuncion. It is a small town, but boasts two famous sites: the home of General Santiago Marino and the Cathedral of the Virgen of El Valle. My wife and I visited the town to see the cathedral and were in awe of the splendor of the place and of the reverence with which the citizens give it.
We arrived about 11am and found the town filled. It was difficult finding a parking space within 1km. After parking, we walked into the center of the town, which revolved around the cathedral. There were numerous carts filled with souvenirs, pictures, rosaries, and other items regarding the cathedral. We were able to spend plenty of our money for on such items.
Finally, we entered the cathedral. Mass was being held, but tourists from Europe, Asia, and North America were roaming through the place as the service was being held. I was able to get several photos.
The church was built over 200 years ago, so it is very historic. However, of greatest importance is the Virgen del Valle. She is the patron saint of the island and of the citizens. She was designed in Spain late in the 1490s and brought to Margarita in about 1502, where she has remained to this date. This makes this the oldest religious icon of the Catholic Church in the Western Hemisphere.
I can't wait to return to the valley. Strolling through the town and relaxing in the church make a pleasant day.
