Castillo San Carlos De Borromeo

Built between 1664 and 1684, this is the island's largest fort. It was built overlooking the port, looking like a 4-pointed star. Each of the four sides radiating from the center had a lookout tower attached.

My wife and I visited this site on our last trip to the island. There was a beautiful view across the bay. We were able to look at the ancient cannons, see artifacts in the museum, and walk along the ramparts of the fort.

Entry was free, but a donation for the upkeep of the fort was the common custom. Many visitors gave between 1,000 - 5,000 Bolivares each as a donation (about $1.50 - $7.50 USD). I hope to return to this fort on my next trip to "The Isla"so that I can see the scenery again.
