We visited Singapore Zoo, assured by our guidebook that it is one of the world’s few ‘open’ zoos where animals are not caged, but ‘moated’ on roomy islands recreating their natural habits. It has apparently been praised by leading conservationists. We found it a joy to watch gorillas, monkeys, pygmy hippos, komodo dragons, and Asian tigers to name but a few roaming around looking very unstressed. The zoo is so large that there is a guide and map to it. We ended up spending several hours there, fascinated at being able to get up close to Australasian animals. It some respects it was quite frightening to find out what creatures there are out there.
