The Oakland Zoo is a smaller, modern, natural zoo, with over 100 species of animals in 58 exhibits.
For one month before Christmas every year, the Zoo is open from 5:30 - 9:00 pm for a special Zoo Lights event. What is Zoo Lights? A train ride viewing 100 lighted structures built with over 100,000 lights - animals mostly. AMazing!
There's a 15-minute long "Sky Ride" chair lift which offers views from above the animals, as well as panoramic views of the SF bay. additionally, there is a a two-thirds size replica of the Civil War-era locomotive train ride and a merry-go-round.
The entrance fee may be free, if you bring your zoo membership card from one of a 100 reciprocal zoos across the U.S.
