The Vienna opera is one of the finest opera houses in the western world. It heard the voices of Caruso, Galli-Curci, Schumann-Heink, Jeritza, Kiepura and many others. The building dates to the 1860s. The architects were von Siccardsburg and van der Nuell. The latter shot himself when the building was severely criticised for not having a pedestal. The building took a direct bomb hit during WW II and was laboriously and carefully reconstructed. Even if you are not an opera buff, go there and take the guided tour, because the inside of the building is truly magnificent. On a previous visit to Vienna, we attended the Nutcracker and it was wonderful.
