The entry is done by the law courts, from where identity check. One can assist in summer has particularly pleasant concerts (Tel.: 01 43 26 02 28) This jewel of 13 2nd century the Gothic architecture is coupled today with the austere walls of the law courts. The Holy Vault was built by Louis Saint into 1248 to accommodate the Crown of spine of Christ and a fragment of her cross (today with Our-Lady). To buy to these relics with his cousin the Emperor of Constantinople and to make their mounting (trunk shining of precious stones, melted during the Revolution), the king of France spent twice and half the cost of the construction of the St Chapelle?
Completed into 1348, it burned into 1630 and was rebuilt very slowly. Its demolition was considered during the Revolution, then it was used as deposit of the legal files until 1837, before being restored of 1841 to 1867 thanks to the return in favour of the Average Age to the 19 2nd century. In a little more than 2 years of construction, the architect Pierre de Montreuil undertook to the highest point search of the Gothic style: the pushes of the vaults are supported outside by very projecting buttresses (ballasted of pinnacles, but voluntarily without arc-paring), which allowed the removal of the walls the profit of very large canopies. The solidity of the stone is due also to the fact that it was cut in the direction of the vein of the career. In spite of the frail appearance of the pillars of the reinforcement, balance has been such, as it did not have a crack there for seven centuries. On the frontage of the input, whose decoration dates from 19 2nd, are superimposed two porches. With the top, the large pink is surmounted by a balustrade cut out in flowers of lily, symbols of the royal capacity.
The vault includes/understands two stages: that of the servants and the people at the ground floor and that of the sovereign on the first floor. The low vault was repaired at the 19 2nd century. The flagstones of the ground cover tombs of canons of 14th and 15 2nd century. The high vault is an immense canopy: the stained glasses, oldest of Paris, count 1134 scenes of Old and the New will, of which 720 date the 13 2nd century, realized by the same Masters glass-makers as in Chartres.
