Playing among the chickens, palms and locals at a public course makes for a great day in the Keys. Start your day off early to avoid the mid-afternoon heat. Hole 7 features mangroves that you have to hit over - I lost at least three balls on this hole. :)
Condos that surround the course are available for rent through owners as well as rental agencies in Key West. Nice to live in (I lived there for over 6 months), the Key West Golf Club is a gated community with two pools, putting green, psudo range and 18 hole course.
