Sulphur Mountain Gondola

One of the top five things we did during our week with kids in Banff. The glass wall gondolas are large enough to hold six and travel from the town of Banff up to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in about 7 minutes each way. On the way you can see for a hundred miles if the weather is clear.

It is a good thing to do when you first get to Banff because it helps you get your bearings and gives an idea of how Banff fits into the Rockies in that area. At the top of the mountain is a restaurant and snack bar as well as a gift shop. There are semi-tame mountain goats, marmots, etc. hanging around looking for handouts from tourists.

You can go on short hikes from the summit landing or just hang around for awhile drinking in the 360 degree unobstructed views of the spectacular mountain ranges. For an idea of what kind of scenery you'll experience go to the website with the live cam updated every ten minutes: www.banffgondola.com. From that website you can get particulars about the gondola. You can also click on a view from the summit on a clear day. It is apparently clear most of the summer and hazy much of the rest of the year. This is truly a top of the world feeling and not to be missed even if you only have a few days in the area.
