Across the West Seattle bridge on the northern tip of the pennisula is probably the closest 'off the beaten path' place to hang with local Seattlites.
The beach is sand and doesn't allow dogs. The beach has a paved path that extends for several miles and is separated for walkers and bikers/inline skaters. The local park runs weekly beach volleyball leagues during the summer, usually Friday nights and Saturdays.
Don't come here if you plan to do a lot of swimming. The Puget Sound is barely over 50 degrees year round.
The best thing about the beach is people watching and the views. While standing under a mini Statue of Liberty you can look left and see the snow covered Olympic Mountains or look right and see the Seattle downtown skyline. Both Tulleys and Starbucks are located on the beach and I recommend getting a drink and then watching lovers stroll down the path, little children play in the sand and teenagers try to figure out the dating game.
