Feria de Mataderos - Flag Day

Flag Day in Argentina is June 20th. It happened to be a Sunday in 1999 and there were festivities all over the city. On the outskirts of B.A. was the Feria de Mataderos, an outside market with a small-town feel. There were gauchos (cowboys) showing off their skills, local artists, traditional music and dance demonstrations, arts and crafts galore (I love jewellry!!!), and pony rides for the kids - some things are universal.

How could I forget the food! Wonderful scents wafting from all directions. I recommend the empanadas. I understand the market is open every weekend, we got lucky with the other cultural offerings because it was Flag Day. Check with a local as Argentina has numerous national holidays and you too may get lucky.

On our way back into the city we stumbled across another gathering in a park. Lots of market stalls again, selling local arts and crafts, candy etc. and a show by some street performers who knew just enough English to pick on us tourists and confuse us. Great fun all around.
