My wife, 2 children (10 and 7 yr old) and I, stayed at the Riu Macao in Punta Cana, DR on the 2nd week of March 2010. The hotel was in great condition, very well kept grounds and great beach location. The beach was very clean and had plenty of space with chairs available (I was actually surprised that we didn't have to fight for chairs or get up super early to "reserve" one). The one thing about this beach that differentiated it from others is the "palm forest" behind the shoreline. There is literally a forest of palm trees in the sand that provide shade if you want to relax and take a break from the sun. The pool was nice (not too big) and had plenty of chairs and umbrellas around it. The room were good and had lots of space. The food was great. I was most impressed with the hotel staff. The entire hotel staff was excellent, smiling, helpful and very friendly. They really made the trip a joy. Tips Bring bug spray just in case- although there weren't many mosquitoes, there were a few. Men bring long pants for dinner - all of the restaurants require long pants for men for dinner (this was probably the only thing I didn't like) Bring a thermos or drink bottle - the glasses the hotel provides for drink as re small. Bring your own Big Gulp and enjoy! Bring one dollar bills - the staff is extremely friendly and definitely appreciate tips (although they would never ask) I would definitely recommend this hotel.
