I was fortunate to stumble across Le Petit Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland, via the Zermatt Tourism Office. My girlfriend and I had been employing this show up and find a hotel when we get there method in other places on our trip with mixed results, so our experience with Le Petit Hotel was a welcome and pleasant surprise. The hotel is a modern hotel with clean rooms, a cozy elevator, and cable television (with German, Italian, French, and English channels). Our room had two twin beds, pushed together, which despite our misgiving, was extremely comfortable (much more so than the older full we had slept on in Chamonix). The view from our window, of the village and facing Ob./Unt. Gabelhorn, was breathtaking. The hotel also has an accessible roof deck, from which you can see the entire town and surrounding mountains, including an unobstructed view of the Matterhorn. Frank and Antonio, the two hotel managers we interacted with, could not have been more pleasant or accommodating (both speaking English very well). Antonio offered several great suggestions on where to eat and what sights were best seen when. Frank graciously facilitated the return of my keys, after I had forgotten them in the room after our departure (at no cost to me). Typical of many hotels in the area, Le Petit Hotel offered a morning breakfast as part of the nightly rate. The breakfast included lots of fresh fruit, cheeses, meat, cereals, breads, and various beverages (juices, coffee, teas). While the breakfast is offered from 7am-9am, on the day of our departure (checking out at 7am), Antonio had arrived early and started the breakfast service 10 minutes before 7. I will certainly stay at Le Petit Hotel on my next visit to Zermatt.
