Just got back from Key West. We stayed 4 nights at the Casa Marina Hotel and have to say that we where underwhelmed. The lobby is impressive and the double pools and landscaping on the grounds are beautiful. Our issues started at check in as we were introduced to the first of many members of a less than enthusiastic staff. We booked the Ocean Vista King room, a very grand name for a very cramped, oddly shaped and poorly planned space. When you open the door it barely clears a wardrobe closet that blocks the way. (I'm a small guy, 5'7" and 140 and I had to pick my small carry-ons up and squeeze in sideways.) When we asked the front desk staff if we could upgrade to a larger room, we were told "no." That's it. Just "no." Again, not quite rude, but not inviting or explanatory in any way. We were led to believe that all these people really just didn't want to be there. The food at the poolside grill was awful. But we did have room service 3 times and it was all delicious. On the third day we tried the breakfast by the pool which was another let down. Little annoyances abounded; the coffee service in the room wasn't stocked properly, the cleaning staff never replaced used glassware or coffee cups and the air conditioning was touch and go. I will say the "water shack" (a little hut next to the small private beach) had great and easy rentals of wave runners, kayaks, bicycles, paddle boards, etc... We took advantage of all of these. The 2 hour wave runner tour around the island was the highlight of our trip. And it is the only part of this trip and resort which I highly recommend. (Our guide's name was Matt and he was awesome.) So the good: Beautiful lobby, pools and gardening. Private beach. Water shack rentals and tours were nice and convenient. And the bad: Bad food (unless you pay double for room service.) Poor attitudes of staff. Unpredictable housekeeping. Tiny rooms. WAY overpriced. Internet was sketchy and slow.
