Cairns itself is a fascinating city in a wonderful location. Plenty of good shopping, and the fruit bats are an incredible spectacle. Interesting shorebirds (new to us) also within an easy walk. The aboriginal art festival was also well worth a visit. Cairns is an ideal base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef as well as the wet tropics of Cape York, and the Rydges Plaza is a very comfortable and well-run hotel.
