The Hilo side of the Big Island doesn't really have any luxury resorts. There are just a few hotels there, and they are are quite dated. The Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is the best of the lot, and is a good value for the price. You should expect decor from years past, older fixtures, and a "smudgy" appearance, but it was clean, and had some real perks. They have a fridge in each room, and the views on the water side are amazing! We really enjoyed spending our days out exploring, in the ocean, etc, then coming back to the Castle to relax on the balcony and watch the sunset. Parking was ample, and downtown Hilo is just 1-2 miles away with tons of great restaurants. In fact, we liked the Hilo restaurants much better than the resort food on the Kona side!
