Food was awful - and we are SOOOO not picky.

We've been to Cozumel several times and when going with some friends, they wanted to stay "upscale." We had stayed at several other properties in Cozumel, but had never been to the Occidental. I wouldn't consider it "upscale." First, we had to wait about three hours for our room to be cleaned when arriving on a Monday. Not a big deal, but it was lunch time, and no one thought to offer us even a drink. After we hung out for awhile, I asked where the restaurant was and was directed to the lunch place on the beach. It was close to 4 now and they were closing. It's quite the hike from the front desk to the beach, and the kid was super tired. Breakfast and dinner were at another restaurant by the front desk. These were just the buffets - we were there for 7 days and couldn't get a reservation at the nicer restaurants. I guess I just prefer the smaller resorts - this was a trek anytime we wanted to do anything. The beach was spectacular though - snorkeling right off the beach we saw lots of fish, stingray and barracuda. The kid absolutely loved that - the location being so close to Palancar Reef is definitely what you are paying for. That said, it's about a $20 cab ride to downtown. When we go back, I think we'll go back to the Sol Melia (food was awesome and the resort is smaller), but opt for the junior suite so we can get a bigger room. If you want to stay on this end of the island, I would book the Iberostar. Plus - timeshare people were like locusts!
