We took an Egypt tour through Globus Tours / Avalon Travel and they put us up in the Mena House for the first two nights. This was a first-class place and our room had a view of the pyramids. Security is excellent. The main building is quite historic and has been host to many imoportant meetings including the Arab - Israeli peace talks.
It has several very good restaurants and like any first rate hotel, the prices are a bit high. Alcoholic beverages are especially expensive both here and throughout Egypt but the local beer (Sakara) is a relative bargain and it's pretty good. Our guide said the Pharohs of old had beer and bread as their standard breakfast.
Overall we had a wonderful time here. We were placed in the Fairmont Heliopolis on the way back because it was close to the airport and that is a beautiful hotel but we thought the Mena House had an old world charm that couldn't be beat.
