Well, one of my new favorite hotel chains has finally suffered a serious blow to their esteem (in my opinion). The George in downtown Washington D.C. is a wonderful property and has all the things I love about the Kimpton chain; beautiful old property that is refurbished, very convenient downtown city setting and very friendly, service oriented staff. The room was very large for old hotel standards and the bath was also big. The room was clean and well furnished, very comfortable. Hot cider at the evening wine reception was welcome after a chilling walk in December 09. Unfortunately departure day met with some problems with service. I asked for a taxi to be out front at 5:45am the day before we were to depart and then left a 4:45am wake up with the desk. We only woke because we set our phone alarms. This is the very first hotel wake up call I have ever missed (in hundreds of stays). The other problem was that the hotel arranged for a town car instead of the requested taxi. This should be a warning to others, be specific and don’t feel obligated to keep the town car- just say no and move to a cab. The town car flat rated the airport for $* and the cab fares had been running us about $* with a tip. The restaurant that we ate at the night before did the same thing – we asked for a cab and they gave us a town car – the ride was just a couple of dollars more – but still. The hotel restaurant was outstanding for both Dinner and Breakfast.
