Two days in San Diego with my mom, brothers, and my infant son.

I found Hawthorn Suites online and booked it because the 2-bedroom suite could accommodate up to 6 adults, making it a much more affordable option for our party of 4 adults and 1 infant, compared to getting two or three bedrooms elsewhere. The hotel was pretty easy to find beside King's Inn along Hotel Circle South, off the freeway. The Hawthorn Suites building is flushed further from the road than the other hotels along the street, so the rooms are pretty quiet. Our two-bedroom suite on the first floor was huge. The layout of the suite was a little odd: as if two separate units had simply been joined together. The main part of the suite was a living room furnished with a sofabed and an armchair, a fully-equipped kitchenette, and an adjoining bedroom (no door separated the bedroom from the living area), which I'll call the master bedroom. Attached to the bedroom was a bathroom. The second bedroom, which I'll call the guest bedroom, was at the end of a long hall, behind a door. The guest bathroom was right outside the guest bedroom. The suite was not new; it was slightly tired-looking and some of the furniture and appliances were a little old too. Nonetheless, the room was as well-equipped as a serviced apartment/extended stay apartment: the kitchenette had a double electric stove, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a personal refrigerator, cooking implements, dinnerware, flatware and glasses. The hotel provided dishwashing liquid, paper towels, and a dish towel. The room wasn't the most sparkling I'd seen, but it was reasonably clean, the linens seemed new, and the beds were comfortable. The other extras were great too: the room rate came with a free continental buffet breakfast and "socials" (drinks) in the afternoon. There was free WiFi. The televisions (1 in each bedroom, 1 in the living room) had all the major cable channels. Bottom line: at the rate of $150++ for up to 6 adults, it's a pretty good place to stay, and I'd definitely consider Hawthorn Suites again the next time I'm in San Diego.
