Family Trip to Texas

We had a great time on our week-long trip to Canyon Lake. We visited nearby San Antonio to see the River Walk and the Alamo. We also had a great time visiting SeaWorld and the famous water park Schlitterbahn.

Resort Experience:
When we arrived at Canyon Lake after a long day of traveling, it was raining. The rain wasn't bad, but all the wooden stairs were very slippery, so it wasn't easy to carry our luggage down the 50 slippery stairs to get to our room. The room itself wasn't bad. It was very clean, and the staff had folded the towels and washcloths into some nice little flowers. The master bathroom had a big Jacuzzi tub. Unfortunately, we were too busy to really get a chance to use it. The bathroom was missing a towel bar and plug in the sink. The second bedroom had a good-sized shower, so we ended up using that bathroom more. The kitchen had everything we needed, and we had a nice view of the lake from our balcony. The unit was kind of small, and although it could sleep six people, unless some were kids, I wouldn't recommend it. We had our three kids, ages 8, 4, and 7 weeks. We saw that they had playpens available, but since the unit was so small, there was no room upstairs in the bedroom to put it, and I didn't feel comfortable having it downstairs. So, if you are coming with a baby, that is something to keep in mind.

My husband and kids had a great time swimming in the pool, playing miniature golf and shuffleboard, and playing on the playground. The horseback riding looked reasonable, but we didn't have time to do it.

Overall, the unit was fine, though it could use some updating and touch-ups.

We decided that we had to have some barbeque since we were in Texas, and this is the place we found in Canyon Lake. It was delicious. I would recommend the ribs and brisket, but the ham and turkey were really good, too. The barbeque sauce is on the spicy side, but wonderful. They told us that it would be available on the Internet in a few months.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark

We saw Schlitterbahn on the Travel Channel as the best water park in the US, and my husband had wanted to come here since. We had such a great time. There were things for people of all ages to do. We took our kids, ages 8, 4, and 7 weeks. The older ones were able to do anything we felt like they were able to do, and there were a lot of shaded areas with picnic tables for us to sit at with the little one.

I would recommend buying your tickets on the Internet before you go. We did and were able to add on an unlimited soft drink with our ticket that you could not buy at the park. So, for $5, we got free refills all day, which is nice when it is so hot.

One other nice thing they offer is Splash Cash, which you buy when you buy your tickets. Essentially, it is a plastic bracelet that has tear-off tabs you use like cash, and if you don't use it all, you can get your cash back at the end of the day. The unfortunate part of our trip was that the original west side of the park was closed, so we weren't able to enjoy that. We did spend 2 days there from opening to closing, and the kids still didn't want to leave. We definitely plan on making a trip back here sometime.

SeaWorld San Antonio

We had such a great time the day we visited Sea World, we definitely could have spent a second day there, but we just ran out of time. There is so much to do there: the animals, the water park, and the rides. We watched the Shamu show and the dolphin show, and I was very happy to see that the seating area in both of these arenas was covered. The kids had a lot of fun in the water-park area, and they would have been happy to spend the whole day there. After the water park, we hit the rides, and it was great to wait until the last part of the day, because there were no lines. Unfortunately, the Steel Eel was closed that day, but I walked right on the Great White without having to wait at all, and there were people on it that had been riding it over and over without getting off. The kids had a great time on the log ride and Rio Loco. One tip I would have would be to purchase your tickets on the Internet, because they had a deal where you could get a 2-day pass for the price of a 1-day pass.
