You Must Go to Tahoe!

Tahoe is an easy-to-reach, all-seasons destination. Great seasonal snow and waterskiing, casinos, great food, and fun nearby. We went for late spring skiing and enjoyed three different mountains, even though Heavenly was closed! The huge lake and alpine setting are gorgeous! You must go!

Tahoe Beach and Ski Club

Best Things Nearby:
Great location, just down the street from all the action. It's a mile or so to the casinos but an easy, pleasant walk around the lake. Heavenly is also within walking distance, but a shuttle is available through town and from the Tahoe Beach and Ski Club. If you get bored with Heavenly, there are many, many great skiing opportunities within a 30-minute drive. The Tahoe Beach and Ski Club backs up to the lake, with a small beach and park available for guests.

Best Things About the Resort:
This one-bedroom was very large and beautifully appointed. The partial kitchen was more than adequate. The sofa bed was very comfortable, and there is a 3/4 bath off the living room. The master bedroom was huge -- several children could sleep comfortably on the floor, it was so big. There is a jacuzzi tub in the master bath. The staff is great, and the welcome RCI members' party was really fun. They gave away GREAT prizes (although we didn't win one!). There is also a gym/health club and sauna.

Resort Experience:
The condos are great! They are very upscale. The staff is very helpful and nice. You will like it here. There are squirrels and pine trees all around. Lake Tahoe is beautiful at all times of the year. Please note that it can get hot in the summer. A trip around the lake will take most of the day, but there are lots of beautiful vistas, good restaurants, shops, and multi-million dollar homes to drool over along the way. The casinos are about a mile away. Less bling-bling than Vegas or Reno, but still very fun. Of course, they offer all the usual cocktails, bargain buffets, giveaways, etc.

Chevy's Mexican Restaurant

We are not lucky enough to have a Chevy's near our home, or we would eat there all the time! It is best described as a sort of healthy Tex-Mex. The portions are HUGE. You have many, many choices of entrees and side dishes -- all we tried were delicious. We had lunch twice and dinner once in a week. This restaurant is about halfway between the Tahoe Beach & Ski Resort and the casinos on the mountain side of the street. It doesn't look like anything special from the outside, but believe us -- it is MUY BIEN!!!

The Ponderosa Ranch

Member Rating 3 out of 5 by Cindyeee on November 15, 2004

The Ponderosa is the home of the Cartwright family, the fictional characters in the long-running TV show Bonanza. It is an authentic replica (!) of a rancher's home in the 1800s. The house was actually used in the TV series when they were on location. You will never watch the show in the same way again. They had some very inventive cameramen!

There is a long main street of an old western town, complete with the blacksmith, jail, general store, fire station, and much, much more. There is a long hike you can take up through the woods, where lots of the cowboy chases took place. We were there on the first day of the season (April 18 or so). Not all of the activities were available on that day. They have a chuck wagon breakfast tour more toward summer. We will definitely try that next time.

Honestly, it is a little HOKEY, but fun! If you loved Bonanza , enjoy the history of the Old West, or want to give the kids a fun day, take a day trip to the Ponderosa. They have great souvenir shops (no kidding), so you might want to stock up here. Everyone loved the Stagecoach Pencil Sharpeners ($4) I brought home for gifts! The Ponderosa is a great way to spend time with your family. Look for discount coupons around town
