We had a wonderful week at the oceanfront Samoset Resort in Rockland, Maine. The location is on the breathtaking Penobscot Bay. The 18 hole Oceanside championship golf course is something to behold. Rockland Maine now has its own Windjammer boats at the new dock located in the Harbor.
Best Things Nearby:
Be sure to visit the shops in Dramascotta and Boothbay Harbor. Captain Fish in Boothbay Harbor has the best narrated boat rides and has real comfortable boats. He comes in real close to the sights on his tour. They really know the local waters and tales about local people and the area.
Best Things About the Resort:
The Samoset is Gold Crown and has 72 timeshare units, all with private balconies or patios, with spectacular ocean views. We had a one-bedroom unit that had a kitchen area with microwave oven, dining/living area with sofa bed, master suite and full bathroom. The décor is very nice, downeast Maine style. Upon entering the unit, everything was clean and had a clean smell; everything is well maintained, housekeeping is great.
The entrance to the Rockland Breakwater Light is on site with easy access to the striking rock formation that juts out almost one mile into Rockland Harbor with a brick lighthouse on the end. You can walk all the way out to the end on the flat manmade rock breakwater to the lighthouse. Since the last time we visited the area they now have a gift shop in the Lighthouse. The walk out on the breakwater is almost a mile long one way and there are no restrooms in the Lighthouse, so be prepared. The view is wonderful you are close to the passing ferryboats that go out Vinalhaven. Across the harbor is Owls Head lighthouse, the last time that we visited Owls Head it was unmanned and the access to the Lighthouse was blocked. Good news - it is now manned and fixed up with access to the Lighthouse. If you look inland you will have a great view of the waterfront of Rockland Maine.
The last time we stayed was in December, we enjoy walking along the ocean cliff along the edge of the golf course, you can see the local ducks along the seacoast. The walk around the golf course takes a little over one hour. The only problem is during golf season this walk is taboo. You are only allowed to walk out to the breakwater or along the edge of the road. Samoset will not allow any walking that is near the golf course. They should have provided walking paths next to the fence along the course. Not everyone is into golf. Be careful while walking on the road as they have a lot of local traffic with local members to the health club and they are trying to get in before and after work and lunchtime, it is very active.
The Farnsworth Museum in downtown Rockland is fantastic you could spend the whole day there. Be sure to eat at the Rockland Café - they have all you can eat fish and chips, the fish is as fresh as it can be.
A close visit is Rockport Harbor. The view is fantastic, and an old lime kiln is located in the park. Years ago this port was active in lime processing.
While at the Samoset we had lunch twice at the Breakwater Café, it was very nice, great view and excellent lunch.
We are going back to the Samoset in November for Thanksgiving and are looking forward to it.
We were told that High Speed Internet will be available soon in every room (not sure if they will charge for it).
