Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places on earth (in my humble opinion!). We have been here every ski season for the past four years and it continues to be a treat. Don't miss a day exploring Virginia City and the Bucket of Blood Saloon. Stop and buy homemade candies at one of the best candy stores along the route from Lake Tahoe to Virginia City.

Heavenly is expensive but easily accessible. It’s minimal fun for beginning skiers. Our favorite ski resort is Northstar-At-Tahoe, which has great long beginner runs, friendly staff, beautiful mid-mountain location, and is reasonably priced. Our second choice is Squaw Valley. We are seasonal skiers only. Basically we keep learning the same ski techniques each year and never get any better because by the time we get our "ski legs," it's time to go home to Texas again! ${QuickSuggestions} If you are a beginner skier (or just keep mastering the same beginner skills over each year like we do), Northstar-at-Tahoe is the place. It's a bit of a drive up from the South Shore, but there's more nightlife down there, including casinos, restaurants, and other entertainment.

Be careful who you listen to when getting recommendations for places to ski. Our idea of beginner skills and green slopes was way different than the opinions of the young, athletic equipment rental agents. The bottom line is that our entire family walked down an entire mountain at Homewood Ski Resort carrying our skis. We shouldn't have been allowed on the lift after explaining to the attendants that most of our party had never been on a lift before!

Be careful where you leave your skis. Someone lifted mine from the ski storage area (no locks!) during lunch, so I missed skiing for the rest of the day. Thankfully, the "ski thief" was gracious enough to return them to the rental agency at the end of the day and I was not held responsible for paying for their loss! ${BestWay} The best way to get around is driving unless you are in the main area of South Lake Tahoe. There is a new village under construction and it is similar in design to the village built at Beaver Creek CO. There’s not too much to do there until all the facilities are completed. All hotels and casinos are within walking distance from the Heavenly Gondola lift.

This place is kind of tacky, but very clean and comfortable. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The hot tub was pretty small, but the heated pool was a great treat for the kids. The morning pastries were AWESOME! There were free washer/dryers and free internet access in the small gym area. We really enjoyed our stay at this property.
