Coronado - Love the Navy or Get off the Island

As part of a trip to San Diego, we spent several hours on Coronado Island, visiting my cousin who is in the Navy, stationed on the John C. Stennis, which was docked while we were there. This journal is just a very brief overview of a few activities.

Feed the Seagulls *** Support the Sailors *** View the Hotel de Coronado *** Shop on Orange Street *** Drive the Coast${QuickSuggestions} The 'toll' bridge is no more. That is, according to my cousin, the bridge was to cost $1 per vehicle until such time as the bridge was paid for. They must have crossed that line as we were not charged to get across. ${BestWay} Parking is difficult, be patient and be willing to walk a little ways from where you park.

Aggressive, well-trained seagulls will zero in on any visitor who looks likely to offer food. They seem to know to avoid those not willing to share. I had a blast with two loaves of white-bread, creating a continual halo of birds overhead who flawlessly caught thrown morsels mid-air and who were never rude enough to leave any deposits on the heads of their benefactor.

The beaches were white and clean and full of seashells, ripe for collectors. An occasional sand dollar could also be found. The weather was cool and the water cold, but it was still fun to wade. Frolicking fish could be seen in the distance. Our assumption was that they were dolphins.

We were among the only 10 people on about 1 mile of beach.

A variety of small, quaint shops, targetted at tourists pepper Orange Street between cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Most of the items are cute, but priced to gouge the tourists a little. We found a perfectly horrible (read: excellent) Hawaiian shirt for about $30 and there was no discussion, my husband needed it! Parking is difficult and you must orbit patiently to find a spot, then walk up and down the shop-lined streets.

Hotel Del Coronado

The Hotel Del Coronado is fairly recognizable as having been seen in many movies and television shows. We didn't stay there, but did take the opportunity to snap a few shots of this historic hotel.

Support the Sailors

We visited Coronado Island to have lunch with my cousin, stationed on the John C. Stennis. The Navy base, which takes up about half the 'island,' which is actually an isthmus, not an island, is the workplace of thousands of individuals who have made a committment to lay down their lives for our freedom. Apparently, these individuals may get a little 'enthusiastic' from time to time and annoy the other locals on the island. There is reportedly a bit of a rivalry between the Seamen and the Civilians. We noted a car that had painted on the back window, "Love the Navy or Get off the Island." Seemed like good advice to us!
