My recommendation, and what I would consider a middle ground, maybe leaning a bit towards roughing it, are the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) mountain huts. These adorable lodges are in White Mountain National Forest and offer rooms or shared rooms at some of the best locations. The very friendly staff also provide breakfast and dinner and a lot of knowledge of trails and local mountain lore. My favorite is the Lakes of the Clouds Hut. At an elevation of 5,012m near Mt. Monroe, it is in the Presidentials Range, one peak away from Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New Hampshire at 6,288m. Mt. Washington is famous for its weather, like winds reaching incredible speeds (hundreds of miles an hour is not uncommon, especially in winter months), and it is also famous for its skiing and will be discussed in the skiing section of this journal.
