It deems itself a "budget B&B" and a "hostel style B&B". It is only a "budget B&B" by the strange Canadian standard in which B&B accommodation tends to be on an expensive side (at least for people used to UK situation in which a B&B is very often the cheapest option). "Hostel Style" describes Trek Inn better, as it offers common areas accessible to the guests at all times.

The Inn is a small concern, with two private rooms (one en suite and one sharing the bathroom with the dorm) and one small (five beds of which four are on bunks) dorm. The common areas consist of a large, usable kitchen with a fridge, plenty of cupboard space, crockery, utensils, pots and pans as well as a restful and pleasantly decorated sitting room with sofas and armchairs, window seats and a PC station. There is also a terrace (which we didn't have a chance to use as it was pouring with rain during our stay).

We stayed in one of the private rooms, the not-en-suite one called The Driftwood Room (on account of several pieces of the aforementioned driftwood dotted around the room). It was simple but adequate, with a large, comfortable double bed and a large single bed (half way between a standard single and a double size). The window was covered with a blind that worked well enough, at least in the rainy weather we had. Apart from the beds, chair and the bedside table and lamp there was nothing much else in the room. There was a sort of cupboard behind a curtain, but a spare bed frame was there and there was no clothes rail nor easily accessible shelves. This was a pity, as what the room most obviously lacked was some place to put away one's clobber or even hang the coats. Considering the predominant weather conditions in Tofino (i.e. rain, and more rain), lack of coat hooks (which could be easily placed on the door or on the wall by the door) was particularly unfortunate.

The shared bathroom was large and perfectly adequate although a bit tired. There was an efficient shower over a large bath and we had no problems with queues for the bathroom, though I can imagine that could become an issue had all the dorm beds been taken.

Altogether, the room and the bathroom in the Trek Inn were acceptable but nothings special. The kitchen was a comfortable space that, with its large table and a lot of space around it was very conducive to interaction between the visitors.

The breakfast included in the price consisted of fresh bread and raisin bread, plate of fresh fruit and a plentiful supply of butter, jams and marmalade. There was also coffee and tea always available to the guests, as well as milk and a selection of spices and seasoning for those wanting to do some cooking. It was nice though not exceptional (and not quite the standard cooked breakfast one would expect in a B&B).

Joe who runs the B&B is a very friendly and an extremely helpful host, and has a wealth of local knowledge, as well as discount deals with local tour companies (and these are not bad at all, and can be as good as 15% off the price for whale watching for example).

There is free wi-fi as well as a PC with internet (this incurs an extra charge). There is also a phone for guests, free for local calls or those using calling cards.

We paid 125 CAD plus tax for our family of four staying in the Driftwood Room which wasn't a particularly good value for the total package, as (for comparison) we stayed in HI hostels for well below 100 CAD or in cabin/motel type accommodation for around the same money but with larger beds, better equipped rooms and en suite bathrooms.

However, part of the reason for the relatively high price we paid was the fact that (unlike most hotels) the Canadian B&B's (including Trek Inn) don't accept children who use existing bedding free of charge. Normal rates for the Driftwood Room are 60-90 CAD per night depending on season and at this price (especially at its lower end) it represents pretty good value. For individual travellers paying for a dorm bed, at 25-30 CAD the value is pretty good too.

All in all, the Inn offers a budget friendly option for something that combines features of a basic B&B and a good hostel and comes recommended especially for those that look for human touch as well as reasonable quality accommodation. Close
